DOLORES SLOVITER

Dolores Sloviter was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1979, the first woman ever appointed to that court; she was elevated to Chief Judge in 1991 and served in that position for the statutory seven-year period, and continues to serve as an active circuit judge.

Before joining the bench, she practiced law at Dilworth, Paxson, Kalish, Kohn & Levy and later as a member of the firm of Harold E. Kohn. She joined the faculty of law at Temple University where, as a Professor of Law from 1972 until 1979, she taught Antitrust Law, Civil Procedure and Law and the Elderly.  She has received the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Sandra Day O’Connor Award (1997), the James Wilson Award for Service to the Profession by the University of Pennsylvania Law School Alumni Society (1996), the Certificate of Honor Award by Temple University (1996), and the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Judicial Award (1994). She is a member of the board of directors of the National Constitution Center.
