  • George Washington and the Federal ConstitutionHaving briefly discussed the roles of George Washington during the American Revolutionary War and during the 1787 Constitutional Convention, William Weisberger examines how Washington worked to implement significant provisions of the Federal Constitution during his presidency. The establishment of the First Bank of the United States, the ratification of the Jay and Pinckney Treaties, the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion, and the emergence of Jewish civic rights revealed that the Federal Constitution became a viable document during his presidency. Like Joseph J. Ellis and Dan Higginbotham, he believes that these achievements enabled republicanism, capitalism, and expansionism to blossom in the young nation and that Washington should be considered as one of the most significant executives in the American Presidential Hall of Fame.
